Summary

Texas, 1934。

I was not as enthusiastic of the novel as I have been with other Kirsten Hannah books。 The main character and theme was brave and depicted the Depression and migration well but I just didn't feel it。 I was not as enthusiastic of the novel as I have been with other Kirsten Hannah books。 The main character and theme was brave and depicted the Depression and migration well but I just didn't feel it。 。。。more

This is female tragedy porn。 I’m not sorry for saying it。 At the outset of every Kristin Hannah book I have this hope about “Oh good! She’s going to write a feminist manifesto about how strong women can overcome anything!” And then halfway through, I’m over it because so many bad things have happened that it’s not even believable anymore。 I just feel like she does a ton of research on everything bad that ~could~ happen during a time period, decides to make ALL of those bad things happen to one c This is female tragedy porn。 I’m not sorry for saying it。 At the outset of every Kristin Hannah book I have this hope about “Oh good! I picked up The Four Winds without having read much about the Great Depression。 I was intrigued by the dust bowls in Texas。 The Four Winds covers all that。 It also tells the story of Elsa。 Elsa is a strong, determined woman who was not loved enough by her family or her husband but when things got tough, she got tougher。 The Four Winds is a story about working against the odds, making a difference in the world, and helping strangers。 Elsa moves her children across the country to find a better lif I picked up The Four Winds without having read much about the Great Depression。 I was intrigued by the dust bowls in Texas。 The Four Winds covers all that。 It also tells the story of Elsa。 Elsa is a strong, determined woman who was not loved enough by her family or her husband but when things got tough, she got tougher。 The Four Winds is a story about working against the odds, making a difference in the world, and helping strangers。 Elsa moves her children across the country to find a better life and does not find exactly what she expects。 She finds a community of people living together in poverty, she makes friends, she works alongside her friends, and she makes a difference to her community。Kristin Hannah is a must-read author。 If the Great Depression is not your thing find another of her books to read。 I recommend them all! 。。。more

This book was terribly sad from beginning to end, but Kristin Hannah finds a way to write in such a way that is honest and hopeful and beautiful。 I have a feeling this book with stay with me for a long time。

Stasha Blomgren

A heartbreakingly realistic portrayal of hardship, survival and strength。

Loved this book! Definitely sad subject matter but great characters and super interesting to read about the depression from a women’s perspective。 Listened to the audio and loved the author’s note and interview with the audiobook narrator at the end。 Super insightful to draw parallels to the corona virus

Really interested period of history that I haven’t read much about before。 However I did find it rather slow and dragged on it bits。

This was a survival story at its heart, and so honestly placed in time and place。。。 being 1930s America。 I had thought I had a good handle on what the American experience was between the wars; the focus on the Communist threat, the impact of the Great Depression, and of course the dust bowl and impact of the great storms that ravaged the central plains for so many years。 But Kirsten Hannah has been able to breathe an added dimension of life into the history that I thought I knew well, and painte This was a survival story at its heart, and so honestly placed in time and place。。。 being 1930s America。 I had thought I had a good handle on what the American experience was between the wars; the focus on the Communist threat, the impact of the Great Depression, and of course the dust bowl and impact of the great storms that ravaged the central plains for so many years。 But Kirsten Hannah has been able to breathe an added dimension of life into the history that I thought I knew well, and painted such a vivid picture of daily experience in that world。 I read the last 20-odd pages with a lump in my throat, trying not to sob too loudly。 The connection the reader feels to her characters and their plight is intense。 In my opinion, any Kirsten Hannah is a must read 。。。more

I would give it 4 1/2, but I couldn’t。 Five would be ok, but not too many happy things were in the story。 About the dust bowl where farmers were hard working and losing everything。Plus when they moved to California the Cotten farms that used picker paid them nothing and kept them owing money by giving them credit and charging them money to buy grocery at their own stores。 A lot like today where the rich people won’t increase the minimum wage, and they get richer as the poor get poorer。 So much o I would give it 4 1/2, but I couldn’t。 Five would be ok, but not too many happy things were in the story。 About the dust bowl where farmers were hard working and losing everything。Plus when they moved to California the Cotten farms that used picker paid them nothing and kept them owing money by giving them credit and charging them money to buy grocery at their own stores。 A lot like today where the rich people won’t increase the minimum wage, and they get richer as the poor get poorer。 So much of this book is like today! 。。。more

I can’t say I enjoyed this book。 It was well written hence 4 stars。 It was very interesting to read of the terrible conditions the people had to endure during the depression but I found it a very depressing read。

KH creates an amazingly vivid picture with her writing。 This is a heart wrenching depiction of life in the Texas dust bowl, depression era, and migrating to California in search of a better life。 This gripping story is told from the perspective of a single mother。 It is dark and sad, but also reinforces the hope and perseverance of Americans in trying times。

Evelyn

I found this an interesting look at the dust bowl and depression era。

Not my favorite because I just didn’t love the characters—their deepest emotions just felt shallow, or seemed to be glossed over so quickly, even in 400+ pages。 I can’t quite explain it。 But I would definitely recommend reading The Worst Hard Time as a nonfiction companion to The Four Winds。 The things these people experienced are just unthinkable to us today!

I wanted to like this book so badly because I had heard so many good things about it, but I really did not like it at all。 The first couple of chapters moved so quickly, it was confusing and there was zero character building。 For about half of the book it moved slowly and bad stuff kept happening but I felt like I didn't care because I never was given a chance to get attached to the characters。 Then in the end, it was all very anti-capitalism and pro-communism, which made me very angry。 I only I wanted to like this book so badly because I had heard so many good things about it, but I really did not like it at all。 The first couple of chapters moved so quickly, it was confusing and there was zero character building。 For about half of the book it moved slowly and bad stuff kept happening but I felt like I didn't care because I never was given a chance to get attached to the characters。 Then in the end, it was all very anti-capitalism and pro-communism, which made me very angry。 I only gave this book two stars because I feel like there were parts of the book that I might have liked, had I not so strongly disliked the rest of the book。 。。。more

This was a very well written book & the characters were intensely real & I was always wanting better for them。 The content of the story & struggles are very heavy。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 My heart is broken and I am angry。 I live in West Texas。 I know what the dust storms taste like。 I know what fields of cotton look like。 I know how desperate a mother would be to leave the home she loves to build a better life for her children。 And I am angry that despite all this happening 80 years ago, the way the “Okies” were treated, the way workers were cheated。。。we still have not learned。 What a story this was。

Another great story by Kristen Hannah! This one takes place during the Dust Bowl & Great Depression。 Be Brave!

As of recent, it has been very windy in West Texas & made the dust bowl that much more real, of course there is no food shortage here (just the opposite)。 Kristin can make a long novel seem short & her descriptions and struggles from nature feel so real I was surprised to learn she lives on the a east coast (or some coast)。 I was also relieved as a life long Texan that between the 2 states California & Texas—the Californians were depicted as the villains (no resemblance to current times 😂)。 Kris As of recent, it has been very windy in West Texas & made the dust bowl that much more real, of course there is no food shortage here (just the opposite)。 Kristin can make a long novel seem short & her descriptions and struggles from nature feel so real I was surprised to learn she lives on the a east coast (or some coast)。 I was also relieved as a life long Texan that between the 2 states California & Texas—the Californians were depicted as the villains (no resemblance to current times 😂)。 Kristin Hannah is part of the reason I enjoy historical fiction。 She’s a great story teller。 。。。more

A book about courage, resilience, and determination。。。It was a great read about the dust bowl the Great Depression, love of family and the courageous fight to survive。 It felt authentic in its depiction of the depths of despair and the courage and sheer determination it took to survive。 Fascinating story。

This is a wonderful book, powerful in its portrayal of the Great Depression in the west and emotional in its story of Elsa and her children as they confront the overwhelming pressures that they face。 Poverty and injustice overwhelm this story of a family trying to survive。 They are all fighters inspired to make their world better but the forces against them - drought, dust storms, flash floods and social oppression - make their lives an ordeal。 Hannah conveys all this magnificently and gives us This is a wonderful book, powerful in its portrayal of the Great Depression in the west and emotional in its story of Elsa and her children as they confront the overwhelming pressures that they face。 Poverty and injustice overwhelm this story of a family trying to survive。 They are all fighters inspired to make their world better but the forces against them - drought, dust storms, flash floods and social oppression - make their lives an ordeal。 Hannah conveys all this magnificently and gives us yet another fine and moving novel。 。。。more
